For the last 6 weeks I've taped my mouth before going to sleep.
Here are 8 things I've learned:
People who mouth breathe are more likely to develop sleep disorders & invite tooth decay.
Mouth breathing forces your lungs to take in too much air, which can cause snoring & can affect your oral health.
Nose breathing puts your body in a relaxed state & can reduce symptoms of sleep apnea.
It assists in creating a healthy oral microbiome as saliva helps keep your teeth clean while increasing nitric oxide production.
Nitric oxide helps your body dilate & constrict blood vessels.
It can improve heart health, blood pressure, physical performance, memory, learning & sleep quality.
Your body produces 25% of nitric oxide through the sinuses.
-Massive increase in sleep quality -Decrease in resting heart rate -Reduced sleep disruptions -Increase in recovery -More energy -Less anxiety -Increase in focus -Better oral health
I measured my sleep & recovery using an Oura ring.
I've always dealt with multiple sleep disruptions at night.
After taping my mouth most nights I go to sleep with almost zero disruptions.
Getting better sleep helps with recovery & heart health, which affects my energy & mental health the next day.
I have a retainer in my teeth that captures plaque. Because of this every dentist told me I need to get a cleaning every 6 weeks.
After taping my mouth I found a massive reduction in plaque build up.
First time hygienist said I didn't need a cleaning.
I first used a cheap 3M non-allergenic tape from amazon. I taped the top & bottom of my mouth shut before I slept (pic in 1st tweet).
I've tried Somnifix & now use Hostage Tape.
All worked fine. I like Hostage Tape because the material is stretchier.
I'm going to continue to tape my mouth to go sleep because it's been a massive game changer for my sleep & oral health.
Being able to sleep through the night is a blessing.
I'm experiencing too many benefits for me to stop doing it now.
There are limited studies around mouth taping.
Also, people who have sinus issues, severe cases of sleep apnea or are morbidly obese should probably not try this.
This worked for me. I'm not saying it'll work for you.
YMMV and DYOR.
Thanks for reading. Hope you enjoyed the thread.
Mouth taping has been a game changer for me & if it wasn't for twitter I wouldn't have discovered it. Thank you.

Wanted to add that I first learned about this from my twitter family. You rock.
I went deep into this by researching the Buteyko method & @askthedentist blog posts.
Also if you want to improve your sleep I'd recommend @hubermanlab's sleep formula here:
